If you’ve been in the construction and general hands-on industries for a while now, then you know that choosing the right nuts and bolts is a skill unto itself. Here in the States, you’re used to using feet and pounds as measurements; but most of the rest of the world uses the metric system.

As such, it should come as no surprise that metric fasteners dominate manufacturing. The good thing is, it just takes familiarity with a few basics of nuts and bolts in general to ensure you get the correct metric fasteners for machine assembly – at the best prices.

Choose the Right Metric Style

First off, you have to choose the correct metric style for the machines you’re working with. The two basic types of metric fasteners are JIC Japanese and DIN European; the latter range from 6 millimeters to 24 millimeters in diameter, and have course thread pitches that span 1.00 to 3.00 in increments of 0.25 and 0.50. These nuts and bolts are the industry standard online and from industrial suppliers on the ground.

The much rarer JIC Japanese metric employs a 1.25 thread pitch for bolts of several different diameters – 8, 10, and 12 millimeters. It’s important that you determine which metric style suits the machine for which you need the assortment of metric fasteners. It stands to reason that, if you’re in the automotive industry and working with primarily Japanese vehicles, then the JIC metric should dominate your selection.
